About

Sunyata Saskatoon offers mindfulness classes and coaching worldwide via Zoom, and in-person locally at community organizations and businesses.

Śūnyatā

Śūnyatā (shoon-ya-TA) is a Sanskrit term most often translated as “emptiness“.

In the oldest Buddhist texts, this emptiness means emptiness of self. It refers to the fact that if you look closely in your experience for anything that is an independent, unchanging self, you won’t find it. Later movements of Buddhist philosophy turned this premise towards all objects of experience, asserting that no thing perceived in the world has an independent, unchanging essence.

Having an experiential understanding of emptiness can be disorienting, because you realize that fundamental ideas you had taken for granted aren’t quite what they seem to be. You exist, of course, and the world exists, but not in the solid way that you’d thought. At the same time, it’s a liberating understanding, because you realize there’s no need to fit yourself into a box that could never contain you in the first place. You are free to know yourself, and the world, much more directly and vibrantly.

Diligent practice in mindfulness inevitably leads to new insights about yourself and the world. Observing mindfully is how you can know yourself at the deepest level.
